Reading a Great Christmas Tradition

Each year my wife and I search for the great Christmas books to read to our children. We try to start a few weeks before Christmas and read one each night. I suggest that you gather the family around the Christmas tree and read the Christmas stories that you have selected. We have compiled a great collection.

There are several to choose from such as the traditional stories like " The Night before Christmas", " The Grinch" and others. There are also new stories such as "Olive the other Reindeer", "Auntie Clause" and varies other books. Visit your local book store and begin your collection.

Celebrate Memorable Occasions

One of my family fun traditions is to celebrate memorable occasions. I asked my wife to marry me on October 27, 1989. I always try to commemorate that day by giving her a small gift and dinner. This year I plan on buying her an outfit and my sons helping me cook dinner.

Choose those memorable occasions in your family and celebrate them in some way. It could be elaborate or it may just be a card and reminiscing about the occasion.

Start Playing Christmas Music November 1st

One of our Family Fun traditions is to begin playing Christmas music the day after Halloween. I believe that the Christmas seasons approaches so quickly that we do not have time to enjoy the wonderful music of the Christmas season.

The day after Halloween we pull out the Christmas CD's and our house is filled with Christmas music. My children bring out the Christmas catalogs and start writing their lists. We will even start watching the Christmas movies.

I know for some that this may seen overkill but celebrating and enjoying the holidays is part of the Family Fun Tradition.

Celebrate Birthdays Like a National Holiday

One of the most important Family Fun Traditions is the Celebration of birthdays. We have made it a priority to make each person’s birthday a "National Holiday" in our home. As each birthday roles around a special cake is chosen and baked by our family baker. We have a family gathering of aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Our children are involved in the planning a preparation for the “National Holiday” and enjoy helping make that family member feel special on their birthday.

Must do list for the Birthday.
· Special Cake chosen by the birthday person
· We use a “Its my day “ plate for this birthday person
· Involve all members of the family in planning
· Make the occasion a family meal

Share a Family recipe

One way to create family time and pass on a tradition is to share a family recipe. There is no other opportunity filled with more family fun than spending time in the kitchen. Cooking and the kitchen lends itself to making memories and having fun.

This evening my family spent 2 hours with my mother and father huddled around the kitchen island baking chocolate chip and sugar cookies. My mother is the family cook and she has many recipe's and secrets to share. We first gathered for a meal and then broke out the cookie cooking utensils and started baking. With cameras in hand we spent some precious time making cookies and memories.

Try to meet once a month and share some type of recipe. Create a family cookbook. The ideas could be endless.
